In 1816 / 17 came about because of, among other things a volcanic eruption in Indonesia to a global cooling and numerous natural disasters and resulting to extensive crop failure. In the cool and snowy winter 1816/17 occurred therefore particularly large avalanches and the meager food supplies were running low in many regions, so that in the spring of 1817 because of under-and malnutrition, increased disease occurred, leading to increased mortality. In the summer months followed by severe flooding and hail damage. Only with the harvest in autumn 1817, the famine came to an end in most areas.
